Alexander Lock Kah Boon
Kah Boon graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Honours from Middlesex University, London in 2017 and joined us in the same year. During his time in London, Kah Boon also volunteered as a teacher assistant at Barnet Education Trust, where he assisted music instructors with coaching children during lessons and performance rehearsals.
Kah Boon is an energetic and patient individual who enjoys working with children. During his stint as a teacher assistant, he planned several activities and games for young students in music schools. In addition, Kah Boon has also played at various events, including piano accompaniments for choir performances in London and Malaysia, as well as a solo piano performance that was held at the Yamaha Festive Hall, Kelana Jaya, Malaysia in 2016.
With his outgoing personality, Kah Boon hopes to bring joy and fun for his students as they embark on their journey to learn music.
Zhang Hui graduated with a Bachelors in Music with Honours from London’s prestigious Royal College of Music (London). She has been teaching children piano since 2011.
Growing up, Zhang Hui has won several piano competitions. In 2008, she won the first place in the “Golden Sunflower” National Teenagers’ Piano Competition held in China. More recently, she was placed third in the finals of the Singapore International Youth Piano Competition in 2013. She has also participated in a number of piano concerts and recitals held by NAFA. Her pursuit of music has also brought her overseas, where she completed a summer music course in Barcelona, Spain in 2015 and an international placement programme at the London Royal College of Music in 2016.
Zhang Hui is passionate about developing and contributing to the arts scene in Southeast Asia. Students will benefit from her wealth of experience as a talented pianist and an experienced piano instructor.
Crystal Lin Feng
Flute, Vocal & Keyboard Instructor
Crystal graduated with a Bachelors in Music with Honours from London’s prestigious Royal College of Music (London), specializing in the flute as her principal instrument. Since pursuing music at the National Arts Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), she has studied with Evgueni Brokmiller (Associate Principal Flute of Singapore Symphony Orchestra), Roberto Alvarez (Principal Piccolo of Singapore Symphony Orchestra) and Susan Milan (Recording Artiste; Professor of Flute at the Royal College of Music). She has also attended and participated in numerous masterclasses conducted by world renowned flautists and vocalists.
Apart from performing solo and actively participating in local events such as the Singapore Flute Festival, Singapore Night Festival, Singapore's Sports Awards and Chingay, Crystal's music has also brought her around the world. She was invited to perform with the Flute Ensemble Singapore, alongside Goh Tiong Eng, representing Singapore at the 2nd Daegu Flute Music Festival in 2017. In 2013, she received the “Outstanding Award” at the 7th Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna with the Singapore Management University (SMU) Symphonia. In Vienna, she also performed with the SMU Symphonia at many distinguished concert halls, such as the Musikverein (home to Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) and the CVS MuTh (home to the Vienna Boy's Choir).
A versatile and talented musician, Crystal’s music journey began with her passion for singing. At the tender age of five, she was under the tutelage of Ms Gina Ler, a well-known professional singer. She also holds a Trinity College (London) Grade 8 Certificate in Theory of Music and a Trinity Guildhall Grade 8 Certificate in Piano (practical).
"Music is a universal voice and I always look to appreciate the different genres around." This is Crystal’s belief, which is why she has covered a wide range of genres in her experience as a music instructor since 2013. She has given classes on Classical Flute and Contemporary Vocals for different music genres, ranging from Pop/Indie to Musicals! Crystal is passionate about music and hopes to better herself as a music performer and a music educator.
SKAIDRITE RAKOVSKA (SKAI)
Skai has been with us since July 2015 as our resident violin instructor. Born in Latvia, a country with a rich musical culture, Skai picked up the violin at age 5, and has since completed her studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire under the tutelage of renowned musicians, including Igor Bezrodny and Dmitry Shebalyn.
Skai has performed solo and as a member of chamber and symphonic orchestras in over 20 countries in Europe and America. Winners of national and international competitions and performing orchestra members number among her students. Her younger students here have been awarded at the Young Talents Project held by Radio 92.4 FM and have also been invited to perform as part of the Kids’ Philharmonic Orchestra Singapore.
Jourdan has been our resident Guitar Instructor since 2015. With instructional experience in guitar since 2010, Jourdan has a distinguished track record in guitar pedagogy. Professional guitar instructors number among his prior students.
Additionally, Jourdan is no stranger to performing, having appeared on stage at Timbre, Hard Rock Café, and the Esplanade Waterfront and Concourse, among others. Having received his Diploma in 2012 and Degree in Music in 2013 in Lasalle college of the Arts and Rock School Int’l Rock Music Exam Board Grade 8.
A focused and disciplined instructor, Jourdan believes in the importance of flexibility and passion in teaching, and is willing to go the extra mile for his students.
LYU ZHU HUI
Lyu Zhu Hui has been with us at Asia Music School as Piano Instructor since 2016..
Zhu Hui is a graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and has attended Master Classes under professors from the Royal College of Music in London, and at the Isaac Albeniz Music Festival in Spain. Zhu Hui also boasts a wealth of performance experience, having performed at the same festival, as well as having held multiple solo recitals, most recently at the Lee Foundation Theatre in NAFA.
Her talent was recognized at the Xing Hai Bei Piano Competition in 2010, where she was awarded the Xinmiao Prize.
Zhu Hui has also been a Piano Instructor since 2011; during her time at NAFA, she was given the opportunity to teach at the NAFA Art Kindergarten.
CHAN YEOW YEE
Yeow Yee is our resident Erhu instructor, having joined us after graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Bachelor (Hons) in Music, majoring in Erhu. While at NAFA, Yeow Yee was under the tutelage of renowned musicians Li Bao Shun and Wong Sun Tat.
Yeow Yee previously performs as a Erhu player in a Orchestra in 2010 and was awarded the Certificate of Distinction in National Chinese Music Competition in 2008. She has participated in the Llangollen Music Festival, held in Llangollen, Wales, in 2009, and has also toured Taiwan and Malaysia as a performer.
Yeow Yee also has an ABRSM Grade 8 Certification in Piano and Theory. She seeks to pass on her wealth of musical knowledge to her students who range in experience from beginners to those preparing for their diplomas.
SELENA NG SZE LING
Selena has been with us since May 2015 as a piano instructor. She has an ATCL Diploma certificate from Trinity Guildhall, She currently furthering her studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art.
Selena has worked with over 40 students, imparting to them the knowledge and skills required to tackle the ABRSM examinations.
Selena believes strongly that music can change lives for the better and is comfortable teaching individuals or groups. Her professional opinion as an instructor is that practice makes perfect, and if you believe you can, you can!
Started as a percussionist in 1989, Michael had learned to handle various percussion instruments such as the drums, cymbals, timpani, xylophone, drumset, etc. Through the years, he had pick up skills from various drums and percussion coaches such as Mr. Syed Ibrahim B.H.M., Mr. Tama Goh Y.S., Mr. Chua L.H., Mr Ora (Japan). He had also attended various drum workshop conducted by international drummers like Dave Weckl, Dom Famularo, John Tempesta.
In 1991, Michael joined the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra (BHSO) as a resident percussionist. At times, he also double up as saxophonist when required. For over a decade in the BHSO, he also held various post such as Stage and Production Manager, Marketing and Promotion Executive.
Through the years, Michael constantly upgrades himself by taking up music studies in various instruments such as Flute and Saxophone. He also attain certificate in Band Conducting and Teaching in 1995.
In the end of 1999, he pursues his career in the music as Band Director and Instructor. He not only conducts and coaches in various Primary and Secondary School Bands, he also improves the student’s playing level on drumming in other school bands that he assists in.
In 2002, Michael joined the Esplanade as Stage Manager for the Esplanade Opening and Chinese Festival project. In 2004, Michael started music teaching in music school. Over the years, he had various students who attain up to grade 8 practical in music exams on flute and saxophone.
Recently, he also had a number of drum student who attain up to grade 7 drum exam level. Still, he never stops learning new skills and techniques to improve himself. He’s also a former music coach at OB Forest Music (海蝶音樂森林) with well known music producer, Billy Koh (許環良). He is a dedicated music coach that sees into details and refines your playing.
